Traditional CCTV is a forensic tool: it helps reconstruct what already happened. Someone reviews the footage after the inventory shortfall, after the accident, after a person entered where they should not have. The loss already occurred and the recording only documents how.
Video analytics inverts that logic. The system processes the image in real time and raises an event the moment it detects the pattern: a person in a restricted zone, a worker without a helmet on the plant floor, anomalous movement at the register, a vehicle stopped where it should not be. Capture
IP cameras with the resolution, optics, and lighting suited to what you want to detect. Detecting a person at 30 meters at night and reading a plate in motion are different optical problems: the same camera rarely serves both.

Transport and storage
A network sized for the video load and a defined retention policy. This is the top cause of projects degrading by month three: cameras were installed on the existing network and it did not hold the sustained volume.

Analytics
The engine that turns image into event. It can run at the edge (on the camera itself) or on a server. The choice depends on available bandwidth, tolerable latency, and how many simultaneous analyses you need on the same stream.

False positive rate
A detection with too many false alarms deactivates itself: the security team stops watching it within two weeks. Ask for the rate measured in conditions similar to your site, not in the vendor demo reel.
Your actual operating conditions
Lighting, dust, vibration, backlight, rain, and temperature completely change performance. Analytics calibrated in an office does not perform the same on a plant floor, a loading yard, or a cold room.
What runs at the edge and what on the server

Mistakes we see often
Buying by megapixel count
Resolution is worth little with the wrong optics or insufficient lighting. What determines whether something can be detected is pixels on target at the real distance, not the sensor spec.
Putting video on the existing network without sizing it
Video is the most constant traffic on a corporate network. Unsegmented and unsized, it degrades the rest of the operation or degrades itself, dropping recording quality exactly when it matters.
Enabling every available analytic
Each additional detection adds false positives. Better to start with two or three well-calibrated detections than twelve the team ends up ignoring collectively.
Not defining retention before installing
How long video is kept determines storage, and storage determines much of the budget. Discovering this later forces cuts to quality or recording days.
Treating it as a security project only
The same system that detects intrusion measures queue times, zone occupancy, and process compliance. Limiting it to security wastes half the value of the investment.
