Most outages we handle do not come from a faulty device. They come from design decisions that looked minor at the time: cabling that was never certified and degrades with heat, a link with no real redundancy because the second carrier uses the same last mile, a data center where cooling was sized for day-one load rather than year-three load.

How the solution is built

Infrastructure is designed from the bottom up. Each layer depends on the one below being right, and shortcuts are always paid for in the layer above.

    Site and power

    Electrical service, UPS backup, standby generator, and surge protection. This is the most underestimated layer and the one that produces the longest outages: without stable power, no amount of network redundancy helps.

    Structured cabling

    Cat6A or OM4 fiber depending on distance and projected bandwidth, installed and certified with an instrument. Certification is what separates an installation that performs for ten years from one that degrades by the second summer.

    Network

    Switching, routing, and wireless sized for real traffic, with segmentation by load type. Surveillance video, contact center voice, and administrative traffic have different profiles and should not compete for the same path.

    Perimeter and internal security

    Firewalls, segmentation, network access control, and internal traffic visibility. Security designed as a separate layer at the end of a project almost always forces the topology to be reworked.

    Racks, power distribution, cable management, and precision cooling with aisle containment. Thermal density is what determines how much the site can grow without major construction.

Instrument-based cabling certification

Demand the per-link certification report, not a statement that it "tested fine". It is the only objective evidence the installation meets the category you paid for, and it is what backs the manufacturer warranty.

Real redundancy, not nominal

Two links from two carriers sharing the same last mile or the same conduit are not redundancy. Verify the full physical path, not the contract.

Sizing for three years

Network and cooling must be designed for projected load, not current load. Expanding a data center with no thermal headroom means civil works, and that is where costs multiply.

Segmentation from the design stage

Separating video, voice, management, and guest traffic is not a later enhancement: it defines the topology. Adding it afterward forces reconfiguration of equipment in production.

Extended manufacturer warranty

Siemon and Panduit offer long-term system warranties, but only when the installation is performed by an integrator with current certification. Verify your provider holds it, because without it the warranty does not apply.

A real recovery test

Ask when a full restore was last executed. The difference between a backup and a recovery is that only one of them has been proven.

Mistakes we see often

Treating cabling as the line item to save on

It is the longest-lived component of the whole infrastructure and the most expensive to replace, because it means opening up the site again. Saving there is scheduling future construction.

Installing without documenting

An unlabeled panel with no diagram turns any incident into an investigation. Documentation is not bureaucracy: it is half of recovery time.

Leaving power for last

Backup power is sized against the final project load, including what will be added later. Discovering the UPS is undersized always happens at the worst possible moment.

Confusing backup with continuity

Having copies does not mean being able to operate. Continuity is measured in how long the business takes to run again, and that is only known by running the test.

Not separating video traffic

Surveillance generates a constant stream that saturates links sized for office traffic. It is one of the most frequent causes of diffuse degradation nobody manages to attribute.

OM4 fiber is used for backbones, long runs, and high-density links, and is immune to electromagnetic interference. The choice is driven by distance, projected bandwidth, and environmental conditions, not preference.

How is a data center sized so it does not need rebuilding? +

It is sized against projected three-year load, not current load, across three coupled variables: available power, cooling capacity, and per-rack density. Cooling is usually the real growth limit, because expanding it means civil works whereas adding equipment does not.
